Self-Defense Firearms Basics

This lesson will introduce you to a wealth of information on different types of self-defense firearms including handguns, home defense shotguns, and the AR-15 platform, where Michael Martin provides easy to understand explanations of the common terms used so frequently. The goal of this lesson is to de-mystify what can sometimes feel like a topic reserved for experts.

Refuse To Be A Victim

One of the most important steps toward ensuring your own safety is having a personal safety strategy in place before you need it. NRA’s Refuse To Be A Victim® program teaches the tips and techniques you need to be alerted to dangerous situations and to avoid criminal confrontation.

Seminars are open to individuals of all ages. Today, thousands of federal, state and local law enforcement officials and civilians from across the nation utilize this popular program in their crime prevention and community policing initiatives to help protect their communities.

Corporations, educational institutions, and community centers have also adopted the program. All told, more than 120,000 people have benefited from these seminars.

Personal And Home Protection Planning

Developing a personal & home protection plan is a key component of not only preparing for how we should (or might) react if confronted by a violent crime, but also how we might avoid violent crime in the first place. Within this lesson, Michael Martin explains that developing a protection plan is about much more than becoming proficient with a firearm or writing up a home invasion plan. It’s a plan that must encompass awareness, avoidance, and preparation, so that we’re less likely to find ourselves in a situation where we have no other option than to use our firearm, rather than more likely.

Profile

I strive to use my past and present experience as both a sworn law enforcement officer, instructor and teacher, to present comprehensive training in a thorough, but easy to understand method. I value my students and learn from them as they learn from me. I value hard work and will make sure you get the best training possible. I have been a gun enthusiast for the majority of my lifetime. I am a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment, a true red, white and blue patriot, and a firm believer in traditional values and the Constitution of our country.

I began my law enforcement career in 1984 working as a police explorer and then a police cadet. I attended the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Academy and graduated to become a Deputy Sheriff with the distinguished Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. I continued my work as a sworn police officer and honorably retired in 2005 due to an on the job injury. My assignments were varied and included patrol, training officer, defensive tactics instructor, DARE Instructor, Supervisor and narcotics expert.

After retirement I worked as a law enforcement officer trainer for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's department in firearms/range, advanced officer training and advanced driver training. In 2010, I relocated to the State of Texas, which I proudly call home today. I am a certified NRA Instructor, firearms instructor, refuse to be a victim instructor and emergency preparedness instructor.

I look forward to providing you with top notch training and building a lifetime relationship to help us all stay safe.

Profile

Ashley Gould’s passion for firearms started at eight years old where she was taught by her father who worked for a Los Angeles area police department and SWAT team. What was originally just a hobby and a bonding activity between her father and her, eventually became a passion and career choice for her when she was in her twenties. Being able to teach females how to become comfortable and confident with firearms is something that means a great deal to her. Empowering women to become the strongest version of themselves is always the ultimate goal in any class or course that she teaches.
